Pastor Gunia’s life has been dedicated to education and faith. In his hometown of Chicago, he grew up attending Lutheran schools--Messiah Lutheran School and Luther High School North. He graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a double major in Secondary Education and History. His first career was teaching middle school. Then, in 2002, he began his studies at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis to receive his Masters of Divinity. He was ordained in July 2006.
Pastor Gunia’s vicarage was split between congregations in Cincinnati, Ohio, and O'Fallon, Missouri. He served pastorates in Burr Ridge, Westchester, and Lyons, Illinois, before accepting a call to serve St. John Lutheran Church in Niles in 2012. When St. John and Our Savior Lutheran Church in Norwood Park merged to form Ascension Lutheran Church, Pastor Gunia was excited for the opportunity to continue on as Pastor of the newly formed congregation.
Pastor Gunia will always value his personal prayer and devotional life above all else.
Outside of Church, he expresses his devotion by visiting members in their homes, conducting regular worship services at nearby Glenbridge Rehabilitation Facility, and works with Ascension Lutheran Church Niles boards and committees and helps them in their work.
Together with his wife, Kathleen, Pastor Gunia has been blessed with four beautiful children: Joey, Colette, Vivian, and Otto. Pastor’s commitment to education continues as he and Kathleen homeschool their children.
In his free time, Pastor Gunia has a somewhat unique hobby: he is teaching himself Norwegian! He also enjoys running, and (most importantly) rooting for his beloved Chicago Cubs.
He appreciates the time that he spends with his family as well as all the wonderful members of his congregation.
Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. –Isaiah 1:18

But all things should be done decently and in good order.
