Ascension Lutheran Church is the congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, which formed as a merger of St. John Lutheran Church of Niles and Our Savior Lutheran Church of Norwood Park.
We acknowledge that the Holy Scriptures are inerrant. Both Old and New Testament reveal our salvation in Jesus Christ. We acknowledge that Jesus of Nazareth died for our sins and rose again from the dead to open eternal life to us. We acknowledge that God is Triune, that is, he is one God in three persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We believe that the same Jesus who died and rose again will come on the Last Day to raise all people, judge them, and grant to all believers eternal life with him.
We meet regularly for the study of Scripture and to pray for the needs of our congregation, the community and the world. We encourage one another to study the Scriptures and pray at home—alone and with family. We take time to pray for one another.
We submit ourselves to Jesus’ command to show mercy to the orphan, widow, stranger, and others marginalized in society. We make efforts to aid in the feeding of the poor, healing of the sick, and comforting of the bereaved.
We acknowledge that Jesus places his forgiveness within the bread and wine of Holy Communion (which we believe is truly his body and blood), therefore we receive it every Sunday and Holy Days. We believe that Jesus unites us to himself in Baptism, so we reflect on our Baptism daily. We acknowledge that Jesus speaks forgiveness to us through the mouths of others, therefore we confess our sins to one another and receive Jesus’ promised forgiveness. We worship according to the historic rites of the Church and sing the most noble hymns of every generation.
We are a congregation of people who gather together to receive Jesus’ grace, encourage one another to live righteous lives, and to help one another when we fall.
There is always room for you here at Ascension.
